ESPERANCE

ESPERANCE

- a novel from antiquity for screen adaption -
The widowed centenarian Mrs. Bonne and her elderly single daughter are the beneficent powerful Christian matriarchs at the center of a struggle for the soul of their beloved 19th century American town-turned-city, Esperance. They care for its inhabitants as if they were their own children, and are determined to protect them from the corrupting influences of the Sixth Ward, where liquor and its associated vices threaten the common decency that was the heart of their once peaceful, stable town. They enlist the aid of journalist and labor agitator Charles Seaman to help them “slay the Dragon” of unethical and immoral behavior. This historically accurate period piece is “equal parts political intrigue and spiritual awakening, a masterful handling of the sprawling cast of characters whose interactions paint the broad picture of a town becoming a city,” a tale of greed and growth versus good and grounded as resonant now as it was when so eloquently penned a century ago. It offers an commanding, sophisticated dual performance to a seasoned actress playing both Mrs. Bonnes.

SPORTSCAR STORIES

SPORTSCAR STORIES

- an autobiography that reads like a novel -
Volume 5 (of 8) of VALENTINE’S LIFE & TIMES is an autobiography that reads like non-fiction. A fast fun ride in a fast fun car, Sportscar Stories covers a lot of turf as it takes us along for the ride of a lifetime to places we’d never go, and places within those places only Valentine would ever go. Our handsome amusing driver in his early 30s is living in a West Hollywood bungalow and driving a stylish yellow 1965 Corvette Stingray Coupe in California, Las Vegas, Austin and across America on a few road trips. In long chapters we go on Surfin’ Safari along the Southern California coast, visit old 5-star stables whose stalls are occupied by spotless vintage sportscars, street race to nightclubs from Cleopatra’s time, almost get barbecued by The Banditos at their annual meet deep in the heart of Texas, watch trackside from the roof and the pits at The Long Beach Grand Prix, almost die of thirst on a desolate dirt road in the desert on our way to a Vegas wedding, party with the Blue Angels deep behind friendly lines at a major military air show, and travel cross country to lots of places in a New York minute. The numerous stops, sidetracks and asides within each trip or at each event are as entertaining as the primary destination, and why the chapters are so long, and so engaging, and satisfying. And all along the way without even trying, like his prose, he meets old friends, and new strangers who become friends, and girls who seem to pop up out of nowhere from everywhere. The brevity of these highly diverting escapes from his intense work required that Valentine pack lots of fun and activities into short amounts of time, and he does just that with reckless abandon making for a fun read indeed.
